Analysis of Scale Characteristics and Morphological Structure of Gourami (Giant Gourami)

This descriptive laboratory study examined the scale characteristics and general morphology of one giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy). A fresh specimen obtained from a local market in the Banjarmasin area was observed in April 2026. External morphology and morphometrics were recorded, and a scale from the linea lateralis region below the dorsal fin was prepared on a glass slide for binocular-microscope observation. The scale was provisionally identified as ctenoid based on posterior projections interpreted as cteni. Concentric circuli, radial grooves (radii), a focus, and pigment cells were also described. The recorded total length was 25 cm. The recorded body weight was 25.9 g, a value that appears disproportionate to the recorded length and therefore requires verification against the original scale reading and unit. The number of scales examined and microscope magnification were not documented, limiting reproducibility and preventing quantitative microstructural analysis. The results are consequently presented as a specimen-level qualitative observation and not generalized to the broader giant-gourami population.
